The Shadow Academy
In a world no more than a whisper away from our own, the Islands of Grand Britannia have been reduced by the ancient Plague Wars to a land of deep forests and small cities, all governed by a powerful totalitarian Authority.
Against a sinister backdrop of murder and repression, a rebellious pagan outpost seeks a hidden truth that will either unlock the past and restore reason to this world, or bring the dissenters to a tragic capitulation. Into the cauldron of intrigue and subterfuge that is the town and Academy of Petra comes Chad Mundy, the Authority's replacement for a veteran teacher who has committed suicide. At least, that is what he's been told...
As he delves deeper into the secrets locked up in the claustrophobic world of the Academy, he draws the attention of the dissident pagans and the ruthless enforcer, Deadspike, and is caught up in a storm that unravels the treachery and deceits behind the Authority itself.

“...(Cole) is deeply knowledgeable about the sources of his craft and the mystic bent of the stories he wishes to tell. He could easily explode into the first rank of fantasy writers.” — John Clute, Encyclopedia of Fantasy
“...Adrian Cole is a unique voice in modern fantasy fiction, whose visions of heroic adventure and cosmic horror will stay with you for a long time...he is a wonderfully visual writer who has provided us with some of the most stunning grotesquerie since Clark Ashton Smith. REVIEWS:
“I found myself drawn in, interested in the various characters, eager to learn more secrets.” — Wordwizard
“Rating books, for me, is about how engrossed I become - how quickly I want to get back to them during the day. I finished this one in three evenings.” — sko3269
“More than a third of the way in, no spoilers, but something happened that for a little while had me wondering what kind of book this was. It hadn't seemed to be fantasy up UNTIL this point, and it's not.” — Wordwizard, amazon.com
“I recommend this book very highly. In my opinion, it might just be Adrian Cole’s best work to date.” — David Brzeski, reviewer, British Fantasy Society [FULL REVIEW]
“As end of the world stories go, this book has an interesting premise. A worldwide plague is a very popular idea and when Cole flips the premise on its ear at the end with his secret revelation, he provides new ways to look at both science and civilization.” — Jack Hillman, reviewer, Amazing Stories [FULL REVIEW]
Adrian Cole became interested in fantasy and science fiction at an early age, through Tarzan of the Apes, King Solomon's Mines, movies such as Earth versus the Flying Saucers and comics such as the original Classics Illustrated War of the Worlds, as well as the works of Algernon Blackwood, Lovecraft, and Dennis Wheatley.
He has worked as a librarian, an administrator in education, and Director of Resources in a large secondary college in the town of Bideford, North Devon, where he lives with his wife Judy, son Sam, and daughter Katia in an old blacksmith's forge.
His short stories have been published in the Year's Best Fantasy series (DAW Books) and Year's Best Fantasy and Horror, and he was once nominated for the former Balrog Award. His story "Dark Destroyer" was included in the anthology Swords Against the Millennium. His first shared-world novel was The Crimson Talisman, which is set in the realm of Eberron.
Adrian Cole, author of the acclaimed OMARAN SAGA and STAR REQUIEM series, has written his most enthralling book to date, both a chilling sf novel and a comment on the abuse of power in our own world. [MORE]
